Bhūpalī is one of the main pentatonic ragas of hindustani music. Listed in the Saṅgīta-Darpaṇa of Dāmodara, it has been in circulation since at least the beginning of the 17th century. The ascending and descending scale of Bhūpalī is direct. However the charm of this raga lies in the particular approach with which the svara Re, Ga and Dha are played, especially during the ālāpa. In the ascending melodic lines, these svara are approached in avarohi, which means they should be played from the note situated above: (Sa)Ḍha (Ga)Re (Pa)Ga (Ṡa)Dha. Bhūpalī is considered a majestic raga that is best suited for slow tempo. In this regard, Kishori Amonkar's interpretation is a master piece.
